Vacations
are usually packed for at least a week in advance in my book. I make lists, and
lists of lists, then I begin folding, rolling and packing my suitcase with such
precision as to use up every nook and unused cranny in my suitcase perfectly.
I’m not sure why, but I was out of character this trip. I was still excited
about our trip, and I still had my lists, but maybe just not as precisely as
was my norm. This time, I had the suitcases open in ready to pack position, filling
space on my bedroom floor. This was completely opposite of the needed action
which required my filling the suitcase. Now granted, this was a nude vacation…
I mean, what do you really need to pack for this type of excursion? Well, you’d
be surprised! (And according to most of the women I met while at HBR, I wasn’t
alone in the shopping and massive accumulation of items for our trip). So while
I continued to amass items for my ever growing heap, instead of filling the
empty spaces, being efficient and packing as I went, I placed the items into
what became a pile accumulating on top of my suitcase. The last couple of weeks
before our scheduled departure, we continued to shop for items we needed to
meet our costume nights, making sure we had enough sunscreen, picking up
toiletries, etc… All of which, I promptly added to the pile.
Now after
having built this mountain of clothing and accessories, Friday had finally arrived
and still no order was found in the suitcases. We still had to work on this day
before our trip. We arose at 5 a.m. like we always do, showered, dressed, and
off to work we went. We worked our day, returned home and hoped a second wind
would arise within us as we started to pull the “pile” apart. I felt a little
frustrated as I attempted to gain some sort of organization with the unruly
pile (for I thought my enthusiasm over our departure date having finally
arrived would help give my tired mind and body that burst of energy needed to
finish packing). After a long week at work I knew I would experience this
exhaustion… So, why didn’t I pack like I told myself I would? Procrastination, that’s
why, it is my enemy, yet I seem to give in to it more times than I care to
admit. Now going back to how much was needed for a nude vacation, I did give it
a thought or two as my suitcases seemed to get more and more full. Here are
some of the questions that be-bopped about in my head…How many sexy negligĂ©es
did I need to bring for seven days? How many wraps should I bring? Did we have
the right costumes for theme nights? How much clothing should I include
(because in order to use the sister hotel next door, we needed to wear
clothing)? Sunscreen, bug repellent, personal toiletries....Did we really need
this much, or did we even have enough? So much indecision, I think this is what
I will attribute my procrastination to (an old family saying applies here, “A
poor excuse is better than none”). So when we were completely finished putting
everything into the suitcases (which totaled 2 large suitcases, 2 carry-ons,
and my large beach bag which I use as my personal carry bag), we were relieved
to find that the suitcases weighed in at just under 50 pounds (seriously, for a
nude vacation?). We finally sat down to rest around midnight. This was the
point (mentioned in my previous blog) when my husband stated, “I’m just worried
we haven’t brought enough clothing”.
A couple
hours later we were loaded into the shuttle van and off to the airport to begin
our flight to Cancun. Everything went wonderfully, no delays, no complications
(Thank God!). Once we arrived at the Cancun Airport, we followed the easy
instructions given by our tour host, (Marilyn from The Hellion’s Group) and
proceeded directly from airport customs to our pick up site with Lomas Travel.
The gentleman who greeted us was so cheerful and pleasant as he asked our names
and destination. As he helped us with our luggage, he said, “You sure you’re
going to the right place?” We said, “Yes”, questioningly. He then laughed and
said, “Well, I think you bring too much clothes!” Now that was just too funny!
Needless to
say, we over-packed in a big way. We probably could have carried everything we
wore (other than the costumes for theme night) in a backpack. We were not alone
in this packing fop aux, many women (and men as well), said they will know
better next time. Yes, as will we. And, we’ll have more room available to bring
back items we purchased on our trip… We do love our shopping!
